Construction of a 10,000-seater stadium in Thika, Kiambu County
Cabinet Secretary for Youth, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya, alongside Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, describing the project as a transformative investment for both sports and the local economy.
During the ceremony, Mvurya said that The Government had injected KSh 850 million into this project, which will be completed within 10 months. Beyond providing a modern sporting facility, the stadium will open up local economies, create employment opportunities, nurture talent, and position Thika as a key sporting hub in the region.
Amid concerns from local traders, Mvurya reassured residents that the project would proceed without displacing businesses. The assurance was aimed at calming fears and reinforcing government commitment to inclusive development.
The Thika Stadium is part of a broader national push to strengthen grassroots sports infrastructure. Mvurya noted that Kiambu County currently has three stadium projects under implementation by the National Government, in addition to three constituency sports academies designed to nurture young talent. The initiative aligns with the government’s wider Talanta Hela programme, which seeks to identify and support sports and creative talent across the country.
The event was attended by Kiambu County Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, local leaders and senior government officials.
